Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay craftsmanship originated in the early 19th century under royal patronage during the reign of Tipu Sultan and later flourished under the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore. Nurtured by the royal court, the craft became synonymous with refinement and precision, traditionally used for palace interiors, ceremonial objects, and architectural embellishments. Iconic examples of this art form can be seen in the inlaid doors and decorative panels of the Mysore Palace and the Mausoleum at Srirangapatna.
The technique involves meticulously carving recesses into dense, seasoned rosewood and hand-fitting individually cut pieces of contrasting materials such as yellowwood, ebony, and pathangadamara. This labour-intensive process demands years of artisanal training to achieve seamless integration, layered depth, and fine contrast, with traditional beeswax polishing enhancing the natural richness of the materials.
International recognition came in 1914 when Mysore rosewood inlay received a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition. The craft was awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Government of India in 2006 (GI No. 24), safeguarding its authenticity and regional heritage. This artwork has been handcrafted by master artisan Shri Ashokji, continuing the lineage of Mysuru’s distinguished inlay tradition.
