Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay traces its origins to the early 19th century, flourishing under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore. The legacy of this craft is visible in historic architectural elements such as the inlaid doors of Mysore Palace and the mausoleum at Srirangapatna from the reign of Tipu Sultan.
The technique involves carving dense rosewood to create precise recesses, into which lighter woods and coloured inlay are meticulously fitted by hand. Each element is individually cut, shaped, and placed—an exacting process refined over generations of artisans.
The craft received international recognition with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition in 1914 and was later awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), ensuring the protection of its authenticity and regional identity. This artwork has been handcrafted by Shri Barath, continuing Mysuru’s longstanding artisanal lineage.
