MATERIAL AND CARE
Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay is a distinguished craft that dates back to the early 19th century, flourishing under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore. Historic examples of this refined inlay tradition can still be seen adorning the ornate doors of the Mysore Palace and the mausoleum at Srirangapatna from the era of Tipu Sultan.
The process begins with carving precise recesses into dense, dark rosewood. Into these cavities, artisans painstakingly fit lighter woods and coloured inlay to form intricate devotional imagery. Each element is individually cut, shaped, and set by hand, requiring exceptional skill to achieve seamless composition and balance.
In 1914, Mysore Rosewood Inlay received international recognition with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition. It was later awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), ensuring the preservation of its authenticity. This artwork has been handcrafted by Shri Bharath of Mysuru, continuing a lineage of master artisans dedicated to this royal craft tradition.
