Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay emerged in the early 19th century under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore. Its enduring legacy can be seen in historic architectural works such as the inlaid doors of Mysore Palace and the mausoleum at Srirangapatna from the era of Tipu Sultan.
The craft involves carving dense rosewood to form precise recesses, into which contrasting woods and coloured inlay are meticulously fitted by hand. Each element is individually shaped and aligned, requiring years of training to achieve seamless joins and visual harmony.
In 1914, Mysore rosewood inlay received international recognition with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition. The craft was later granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), protecting its authenticity. This artwork has been handcrafted by Shri Barath, continuing Mysuru’s distinguished artisanal lineage.
