Provenance

Mysore rosewood inlay developed in the early 19th century under the patronage of the Wodeyar rulers of Mysore. The craft’s refinement can be seen in historic landmarks such as the inlaid doors of Mysore Palace and the mausoleum at Srirangapatna from the time of Tipu Sultan.

The process involves carving dense rosewood to create precise recesses, into which contrasting woods and coloured inlay are meticulously fitted by hand. Each element is individually shaped, demanding exceptional patience, control, and years of artisanal training.

This tradition earned international recognition with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition in 1914 and was later granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24). This artwork has been handcrafted by Shri Bharath of Mysuru, continuing a lineage rooted in royal workshops and disciplined craftsmanship.
