Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay emerged in the early 1800s under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore. Its legacy is preserved in architectural masterpieces such as the ornate inlaid doors of Mysore Palace and the mausoleum at Srirangapatna from the reign of Tipu Sultan.
This three-dimensional inlay represents an advanced evolution of the craft, requiring layered carving and precise depth control to create sculptural relief. Artisans carve dense rosewood into recessed planes, into which contrasting woods and inlay materials are individually shaped and embedded by hand. The result is a commanding surface that balances devotional symbolism with dimensional form.
The craft received international recognition with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition in 1914 and was later granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24). This artwork has been handcrafted by Shri Manjunath of Mysuru, continuing a lineage defined by precision, patience, and sacred artistry.
