Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay craftsmanship dates back to the early 19th century, evolving under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore during the reign of Tipu Sultan and later flourishing under the Wodeyar dynasty. The craft’s historical significance is evident in architectural masterpieces such as the inlaid doors of the Mysore Palace and the Mausoleum at Srirangapatna.
The technique involves meticulously carving recesses into dense rosewood and hand-fitting contrasting materials to form detailed imagery. Each component is shaped and placed by hand, requiring exceptional precision, patience, and years of artisanal training. Mysore rosewood inlay received international acclaim with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition in 1914 and was granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), protecting its authenticity and regional identity. This artwork has been handcrafted by master artisan Shri Ashokji, continuing Mysuru’s living craft legacy.
