Provenance
This Mysore rosewood inlay panel captures the quiet discipline of fishing—a practice shaped by waiting as much as action. The scene reflects everyday life along India’s rivers and water bodies, where livelihoods depend on rhythm, balance, and an intimate understanding of nature’s pace.
The composition is built through contrast and restraint. Dense, dark rosewood forms the foundation, while lighter woods and subtle acrylic accents bring movement to water, nets, and figures. Each element is carved and inlaid by hand, demanding precision at every stage, much like the patience required in fishing itself.
Rooted in the inlay traditions of Mysore that flourished under royal patronage in the early 19th century, this craft once adorned architectural landmarks such as the Amba Vilas Palace and the Mausoleum at Srirangapatna. Awarded international recognition at the British Empire Exhibition in 1914 and granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006, Mysore rosewood inlay stands as a testament to enduring skill.
Handcrafted by artisan Shri Bharath of Mysore, this panel continues a lineage where stories of labour, livelihood, and landscape are preserved not in ink, but in wood.
