Provenance
Carved from radiant red stone, this sculpture depicts a sacred moment in the Buddha’s journey toward enlightenment. As legend tells, soon after his awakening, the heavens opened and rain poured for seven days. From beneath his seat rose Mucilinda, the serpent king, who coiled his body to lift and protect the Buddha and spread his seven hoods to shield him from the storm.
The artist captures this divine union of serenity and guardianship — the Buddha seated in deep meditation, eyes half-closed in peace, while the seven serpent heads fan out protectively above him. The fine detailing of each scale contrasts beautifully with the smooth red stone finish of the Buddha’s face and robe, symbolizing calm amidst turbulence.
This piece embodies the harmony between nature’s strength and spiritual awakening — a reminder that protection and peace arise from within.
