Provenance
This Tree of Life painting is inspired by the ancient Pattachitra tradition of Odisha, a devotional art form that flourished in the 12th century in association with the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri. Historically created as visual scriptures for temple rituals and storytelling, Pattachitra works conveyed sacred philosophy through disciplined linework, natural pigments, and intricately balanced compositions.
Traditionally painted on patta (prepared cloth), artisans layered cotton fabric with tamarind-seed adhesive, coated it with rice paste, and burnished it to create a smooth painting surface. In this contemporary expression, Art Tussar Silk serves as the canvas, enriched with natural and acrylic pigments that preserve the vibrancy and durability of the artwork. The bold, clean, and angular lines characteristic of Odisha’s classical style are harmonized with floral detailing, symmetrical branches, and ornamental borders that echo the rhythm of nature and temple architecture.
The Tree of Life motif symbolizes the eternal cycle of creation, growth, decay, and renewal. Its roots represent grounding and origin, the trunk stability, and the branches expansion toward the cosmic realm. Within Indian philosophical thought, it reflects balance between the earthly and the divine, embodying interconnected existence and universal order.
Recognized for its cultural importance, Odisha Pattachitra received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2008 as the 70th GI-tagged product of India. This painting has been handcrafted by Shri Bibhuthi of Odisha, continuing a lineage of disciplined craftsmanship and devotional artistry passed down through generations.
