Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay is a distinguished Indian craft that emerged in the early 19th century under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore. The tradition flourished within palace workshops, most notably reflected in the intricately inlaid doors of the Mysore Palace and architectural details at the Srirangapatna mausoleum from the era of Tipu Sultan.
The process begins with dense rosewood being meticulously hand-carved to create precise recesses. Into these cavities, artisans individually fit lighter woods and coloured inlay materials, achieving seamless joins through patience and years of practice. The balance of contrast, symmetry, and restraint is central to the visual language of this craft.
In 1914, Mysore rosewood inlay received international recognition when it was awarded a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition. The craft was later granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), safeguarding its authenticity and cultural heritage.
This artwork has been handcrafted by Shri Bharath of Mysuru, continuing a lineage deeply rooted in royal workshops and artisanal discipline.
