Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay is a distinguished South Indian craft that emerged in the early 19th century under royal patronage, notably during the reign of Tipu Sultan and later nurtured by the Wodeyar dynasty. The craft’s enduring legacy can be seen in the inlaid doors of the Mysore Palace and the historic mausoleum at Srirangapatna.
The technique involves carefully carving recesses into dense rosewood and meticulously fitting contrasting materials by hand to create seamless imagery. This labour-intensive process demands exceptional precision and years of artisanal training.
In 1914, Mysore rosewood inlay received international acclaim with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition. The craft was later granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), safeguarding its authenticity and regional heritage. This deer panel has been handcrafted by artisan Shri Bharath of Mysuru, continuing a lineage rooted in royal workshops and disciplined craftsmanship.
